The Real Dangers Of Chemical Based Cleaners

The Real Dangers Of Chemical Based Cleaners

Aerosols, sprays, wipes, polish, and detergents - these products are created to clean our homes, but what are they doing to our bodies?

The American Lung Association states, “Many cleaning supplies or household products can irritate the eyes or throat, or cause headaches and other health problems, including cancer. Some products release dangerous chemicals, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Other harmful ingredients include ammonia and bleach.

VOCs and other chemicals released when using cleaning supplies contribute to chronic respiratory problems, allergic reactions, and headaches.”

So, why aren’t we listening? What is it about these warnings that aren’t getting through to the average consumer?

Day in, day out, households continue to purchase products from the regular cleaning aisle, applying the chemicals to their homes without gloves, masks, and proper ventilation. These chemicals weren’t intended to be breathed in as often as they currently are; hence, the damage they’re causing is widespread.

So, what’s the solution?

First of all, it’s time for us to familiarize ourselves with the chemicals and ingredients used in these products. Start by reading the labels, and if you don’t recognize the substances used or see mention of chlorine and ammonia too frequently, it’s time to get worried and make a new plan for you and your whole family.

However, unfortunately, the problem doesn’t stop there.

Why?

Companies aren’t legally obliged to list ALL ingredients on their labels. That means that sometimes when something is deemed “green”, it’s far from it.

The best way to counteract this issue is to start choosing natural cleaning products from companies that don’t condone the use of chemicals in the home. This is generally stated on their websites and becomes apparent when you investigate the better, greener alternatives to start using in your home.

Remember, before harsh chemicals were commonly used in homes, regular soaps, vinegar, and baking soda kept American homes clean for centuries. It’s time to go back to the basics. Go back to what is safe for all of us.

If there is ever a situation where you believe you can only use chemicals to deal with a particularly tough mess, just make sure you protect yourself and your family. Put on a mask, open all the windows and wear gloves and protective goggles to protect from any accidents or long-term issues.

And, of course, always remind yourself of the facts before casually opening another bottle of chemical cleaners. Studies have found a link between chemical exposure from cleaning supplies and severe illnesses like occupational asthma and other respiratory diseases. This isn’t something to take lightly.
